Associate Course

There are a number of pathways into dance teaching in the UK, Pro Dance Services “Elite Academy” (for Dance Teacher Training) aims to take students through associate course intended to enable them to take an Associate Examination with the UKA Dance in one of the following:

  • Ballroom
  • Latin American
  • Latino Salsa
  • Classical Sequence

1:- It is important you meet the entry requirements for the training PDS offer.

It is highly specialised face2face and digital course, designed to prepare you for your professional career in dance teaching and to enable you to work towards passing a UKA Diploma.

2:- You will be expected to have had a high level of dance training already, and to have shown commitment through years of  training as well as dance skill.

All of which are essential to allow you to build the stamina, technical ability and range of practical and professional skills required to start your teacher training studies and to sustain a long and satisfying career.

Syllabus Units

for your Portfolio (a mixture of Zoom and video lessons)

  1. History of dance relate to your chosen topic.
  2. Anatomy in relation to dance.
  3. Music Theory.
  4. Classroom Management.
  5. Lesson planning and evaluation.
  6. Licences and Law
  7. Health and Safety (including Covid 19)
  8. Child Protection

for your viva voce examination and demonstration (a mixture of face2face, zoom and video lessons)

  1. Dance Terminology
  2. Understanding chart headings
  3. Technique of each figure/dances in syllabus
  4. Teaching practices
  5. Clarity of explanation
  6. Fault recognition and correction
  7. Choreography of your required dances
  8. Voice project while demonstrating

Examination

(invigilated externally through the UKA)

  1. Candidate will be expected to provide a portfolio on the syllabus units.
  2. Candidate will be expected to dance a demonstration of the dances in their chosen syllabus as both lead and follow and may be required to dance both with a partner or solo. (see below)
  3. Candidate will be expected to participate in a viva voce examination on the theory related to their chosen syllabus and will be required to explain and demonstrate technical moves taken from the syllabus. During this part of the examination the examiner will also be assessing the candidate on
    • Presentation
    • Voice projection
    • Teaching practices
    • Clarity of explanation
    • Fault recognition and correction

Dances required for Demonstration

  • Ballroom – Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Slow Foxtrot
  • Latin American – Cha Cha, Samba, Jive, Rumba, Paso Doble
  • Club Dance (Salsa) – Salsa choose two from  (LA, Cuban, or Mambo) and 3 other dances that are popular on the club dance seen : Merengue, Cha Cha, Bachata etc.
  • Classical Sequence – Waltz, Royal Empress Tango, Fylde Waltz, Britannia Saunter, Premier Two Step.

Cost of course will depends on:-your dance ability, your speed of understanding, how often you can take lessons, the type of lessons you choose.

  • Private digital lessons and voice chats £23 per hour
  • Face2face sessions £39.00 per hour when you travel to Janet in Blackpool or Cumbria
  • Video Evaluations £6 each video up to 15 minutes long.

Examination price due one month before examination date will depend on (we currently charge about £400)

  • Janet’s fee for time on day (approx. 3 hours)
